COVID-19 Update for International Patients
At Children’s National Hospital, we have implemented strategies to limit the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in our community. As a precaution to protect our patients, families and staff, we are following safety recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Traveling to Children's National for Care
For our international families, the CDC has regularly updated information about traveling to the United States.
We understand what a challenging time this is for families. As regulations allow hospitals to bring more patients and families back for necessary care and surgical procedures, we know there are concerns about safety. Below are measures we are taking to protect patients, families and staff:
- International patients traveling for care who do not require a direct admission to the hospital will be required to complete a 14-day quarantine period prior to their first appointment at Children’s National Hospital. Exceptions may be made for appointments deemed clinically urgent. Please speak to a member of the Global Services team for more information.
- We screen patients and visitors with a temperature check and brief health assessment. Only those who meet the health screening requirements may enter our facilities.
- We limit the number of people in reception areas.
- Visitors are limited to one family member only.
- We are staggering appointment times to space out visitors.
- If your child is having surgery, your family will skip registration at the Welcome Desk and go straight to the unit, where you will be registered.
Our staff will observe appropriate distancing when interacting with patients and families.
- There are special processes in place for patients who are being admitted for inpatient care or having surgery or those who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
We assess and update our coronavirus visitor guidelines regularly, and have provided a coronavirus resource hub (in English and Spanish) with helpful information about what to do if your child has been exposed to COVID-19, suggestions and tips for parents in navigating this difficult time, and general questions about the virus.
Testing for Coronavirus
Children’s National is testing all patients for COVID-19 prior to scheduled procedures and admissions. Children can be infected with COVID-19 and show no outward signs of illness. Placing children infected with COVID-19 under anesthesia may increase their risk of complications. Testing allows us to identify children infected with COVID-19 so that we can either postpone their procedure or admission or take extra precautions to care for them in the safest way possible, which could include in isolation.
During the COVID-19 outbreak, Children’s National is taking extra steps to protect our patients, families and staff, including updating our visitation policy. We are screening patients and parents/caregivers for the following COVID-19 symptoms at our Welcome Desks and check-in areas at all locations:
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat and/or respiratory symptoms
In addition, all staff, families/caregivers and visitors must wear a mask at all times while in any Children’s National facility to prevent the spread of COVID-19. View our mask policy disclaimer (in English and Spanish).
