Neurology and Neurosurgery

Dr. Keating measures little boy's head circumference; mother watches and smiles.

At Children’s National Medical Center, our Neurology and Neurosurgery teams specialize in neurological disorders including disease, trauma and malformation of the brain, spine or nervous system. The team includes recognized leaders in minimally invasive techniques, and serves as an international referral destination for pediatric brain tumors, including neurofibromatosis and epilepsy disorders. The divisions of Neurology and Neurosurgery are led by Roger Packer, M.D. (Neurology) and Robert Keating, M.D. (Neurosurgery).

Choosing Children’s National for Neurological Care

At Children’s National Medical Center, we use state-of-the-art imaging tests, innovative research and advanced treatments to provide the best care for children with neurological disorders. Parents are an essential part of our care team. We take the time to explain in detail the diagnostic tests available to your child and answer your questions so that you feel safe and comfortable with each step of the process. When your child needs neurosurgery, our standard of care is to use the least invasive techniques possible. These techniques not only lead to safer and more effective care, but the recovery time is significantly reduced. Your child may return home in as little as two days, compared to two weeks before returning home with traditional open surgery.

Our team offers your child:

  • Comprehensive Care

We offer the highest level of specialized care for any diagnosis with more than 30 pediatric neurologists (doctors who treat problems of the brain, spinal cord, nervous system and muscles). Our trained neurologists, who are part of the largest pediatric neurology team in the country, offer extensive experience in the following areas: epilepsy, neurophysiology, neurology in intensive care, neuro-oncology and neurofibromatosis.
  • Safety

We take additional steps to create the safest possible environment for your child, from child-centered imaging practices to minimally invasive neurosurgery. Experts at Children’s National are also pioneers in intensive care neurology practices, which protect the brain health of our most medically sensitive patients.
  • Specialized Tests

We are one of the few programs in the country with experience in nervous system function tests for children. Tests such as electroencephalograms (EEG) help us accurately diagnose diseases and monitor the progress of treatment.
  • Neuroimaging Experience

Our team includes nationally and internationally renowned radiologists who specialize in the diagnosis of neurological diseases. We use a reduced amount of radiation and still produce high quality images with the best equipment available, even if your child has difficulty staying still.
  • Research

We promote the science of neurological care through clinical trials and research.

Our team treats the full range of neurological diseases, including:

  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Brain tumors
  • Epilepsy
