- Unparalleled expertise. Our Surgical Care Center is led by Anthony Sandler, M.D., who is internationally-renowned for his work on childhood solid tumors and intestinal anomalies. Dr. Sandler’s team consists of more than 90 pediatric surgery specialists, as well as fellowship-trained pediatric anesthesiologists.
- Minimally-invasive pediatric surgery. We use the most sophisticated surgical technology in order to provide your child with a more effective, precise procedure. Children’s National has one of the only programs in the United States dedicated to pediatric bariatric surgery. Led by Evan Nadler, M.D., we perform pediatric sleeve gastrectomy and LAP-BAND surgery on adolescents who meet certain criteria. We also have staff that can provide a range of support services in order to help your family achieve a healthier lifestyle.
Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery
Our cardiac surgeons perform hundreds of procedures each year, the majority of which are on patients under the age of one. Our pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery team is led by world-class surgeons Yves d’Udekem, M.D., Charles Berul, M.D., and Ricardo Munoz, M.D., who are experts in performing heart transplants and other life-saving cardiac procedures.

Our Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) division treats more than 20,000 patients each year and is led by George Zalzal, M.D., one of the leading experts on the pediatric airway and laryngotracheal reconstruction. Dr. Zalzal’s team performs a range of ENT surgeries, including ear malformation surgeries, endoscopic sinus surgery, esophageal surgery and cochlear implant surgery.
Esophageal and Thoracic Surgery Program
The Pediatric Esophageal and Thoracic Surgery Program was developed to streamline the care of children with diseases and disorders of the lungs, mediastinum and esophagus by using the latest diagnostic, surgical and medical techniques. Our team of renowned surgeons, including Timothy Kane, M.D., and Mikael Petrosyan, M.D., offer innovative and minimally invasive surgical treatments, as well as traditional surgical procedures.
Neurology and Neurosurgery
Our Division of Neurology and Neurosurgery, led by William D. Gaillard, M.D. (Neurology) and Robert Keating, M.D. (Neurosurgery), is ranked number three in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Our program features cutting-edge procedures like endoscopic brain surgery, MRI-guided laser ablation and deep brain stimulation, in order to make minimally invasive neurosurgery possible.
Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine
Ranked one of the top 10 American pediatric orthopaedics programs by U.S. News & World Report, our program is led by Matthew Oetgen, M.D., M.B.A., who created the Spinal Fusion Surgical Home, the first of its kind in the U.S. to focus on pediatric patients undergoing spine surgery. Our orthopaedic surgeons, Benjamin Martin, M.D., and Shannon Kelly, M.D., have vast expertise in using noninvasive surgical techniques, such as scoliosis traction and MAGEC spinal growing rods to improve the quality of life for children with spinal deformities.
Pediatric Gynecology Program
Our program is dedicated to infants, children and teens with pediatric gynecological concerns. Led by Veronica Gomez-Lobo, M.D., our exceptional expertise in both pediatric gynecology and surgery allows us to provide treatment for rare conditions and anomalies, such as ovarian torsion, pelvic masses and vulvar lesions.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
We are one of the only hospitals in the U.S. that has a dedicated pediatric plastic surgery program. This program, led by Gary Rogers, M.D., can help care for your child’s reconstructive needs. We treat a variety of conditions, including cleft lip and palate, through our specialized Cleft Lip and Palate Program, led by Albert Oh, M.D. In addition, our Craniofacial Program treats children with a range of craniofacial disorders, including deformational plagiocephaly and pediatric craniosynostosis.

Thyroid Nodule and Thyroid Cancer ClinicWe offer comprehensive care to children and adolescents with thyroid nodules, as well as thyroid cancer.
