Trauma and Burn Center Receives Maryland Designation

The Children’s National Trauma and Burn Center in Washington, D.C., was recently designated Maryland’s out-of-state regional pediatric burn center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).

MIEMSS recognizes Children’s National as best equipped to share the volume of Maryland burn patients with Maryland’s in-state pediatric trauma center. Our team provides high quality burn care to children in Maryland whose geographic location may not allow for timely access to care at Maryland’s in-state pediatric trauma center or other specialty center in Maryland.

The Children’s National Trauma and Burn Center includes:

• A 38-room Emergency Department with two trauma and burn resuscitation rooms
• A 47-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for the most critically burned patients
• A 31-bed Surgical Care Unit for burn patient admissions and care
• An operating room program allowing pain-free dressing under anesthesia
• Burn clinics providing outpatient care and continuum of care for discharged patients
• A care team specially trained in pediatric trauma and burn care, which also provides education to EMS and providers regionally and nationally

Children’s National has the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, as verified by the American College of Surgeons. The only freestanding children’s hospital in the area, Children’s serves as the regional referral center for pediatric trauma care.
