General Questions About Using the Portal

• How do I enroll in the portal?

  1. Request an invite: Portal invites can be requested from many Children’s National team members. For example, you can ask for an invite when calling to schedule an appointment, when signing in for your appointment at the front desk, from care team members during your appointment, and when checking out.

  • Patients over 18 can self-enroll here.
  • You will need your medical record number (MRN) to create an account. Your MRN can be found on: discharge documents, clinic notes, the patient's hospital bracelet or a billing statement. You can also call Medical Records at 202-476-5267 and select Option 7.

  2. Check your email for an invite. The invites expire to protect patient privacy, so please claim the invite promptly. 

• What can I do in MyChildrensPortal?

  In MyChildrensPortal, you can:

  • Access your child’s immunization records
  • View your child’s medication lists
  • View select lab results
  • Access patient education 
  • Download summaries from your visit
  • Read frequently asked questions (FAQs)
  • View and request updates to patient information, including name, address, phone and/or insurance information
  • Access appointments: View future, request new, reschedule and/or cancel existing appointments
  • Download appointments to your calendar

  MyChildrensPortal is not for emergency-related healthcare issues. Please contact your child’s provider’s office directly by phone with any questions you need answered within one business day or sooner. Dial 911 for emergencies.

• Can my partner and I share one account?

  No. You each will need to submit an email address which will be associated with your specific security questions.

• Can I access the portal on my phone or mobile device?

  Yes. MyChildrensPortal is available for both iOS and Android devices via a browser of mobile app. 

  Once you have enrolled in the portal, download the MyChildrensPortal app, and login with your username and password.

• Do messages sent and received become part of my permanent medical record?

  Yes. Any messages sent through secure messaging, along with responses to those messages, will become part of your child's permanent medical record.

• Children's Health Centers Primary Care Patients: Why do I need two portal accounts?

  Primary care and specialty care providers at Children's National use different electronic health records with different patient portals. We have a portal for specialty care, one for Children's Health Centers primary care and another for Children's National Pediatricians & Associates primary care. To ensure you have access to all your child's health records, you may need to sign up for more than one patient portal. If you need further assistance or clarification, please call your child's clinic directly.

• How do I link my children's sibling accounts?

  Children can be linked in parents’ portal accounts. In order to link the accounts, you must receive a portal invitation to the same email address, for each child.

  For the first child:  

  Click on the link in the email. Enter the child’s date of birth and answer the security question. At the bottom of the screen, click “Next, Create Your Account.” Complete the fields to create the account. 

  For remaining children: 

  From the invite email for the subsequent child, click on the link in the email. Enter the child’s date of birth and answer the security question. At the bottom of the screen, click “Next, Create Your Account.”  Sign in with the username and password that you created for the first child. If you know that you have a portal account but cannot recall the password, select "SIGN IN," and select the option for resetting your password.

  To switch between children on the portal: 

  From the menu on the left, click “Health Record, Health Profile.” Use the dropdown arrow next to “Viewing health record for” to select the child’s health information to view.
